Signs You May Need Wisdom Tooth Surgery

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to develop and usually appear during the late teen or early adult years. While some wisdom teeth grow in properly, many become impacted, crowded, or trapped beneath the gums, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection, and damage to neighbouring teeth.

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed immediately, but impacted or improperly positioned teeth can create oral health concerns over time. In many cases, early removal may help prevent future complications.

Symptoms that may indicate the need for wisdom tooth surgery include:

  • Pain or pressure at the back of the mouth.
  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums.
  • Difficulty opening the mouth comfortably.
  • Jaw stiffness or facial swelling.
  • Frequent infections around partially erupted teeth.
  • Crowding or shifting of nearby teeth.
  • Food trapping around hard-to-clean areas.

Wisdom teeth that remain trapped beneath the gums may also increase the risk of cysts, infection, or damage to surrounding bone and teeth.

Why Wisdom Teeth Often Require Surgery

Wisdom teeth frequently do not have enough room to erupt properly. When this happens, the teeth may grow sideways, remain partially impacted, or stay completely trapped beneath the gums and bone.

Surgical removal may be recommended when wisdom teeth are:

  • Impacted beneath the gums.
  • Growing at an angle toward nearby teeth.
  • Causing pain or recurring inflammation.
  • Contributing to infection or gum disease.
  • Increasing the risk of tooth decay in surrounding teeth.
  • Causing crowding or bite problems.

Benefits Of Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery

Removing problematic wisdom teeth may help prevent future oral health complications and improve overall comfort.

Benefits of wisdom tooth surgery may include:

  • Relief from pain and pressure.
  • Reduced risk of infection.
  • Prevention of damage to nearby teeth.
  • Lower risk of gum inflammation and decay.
  • Reduced crowding and bite issues.
  • Improved long-term oral health.

In some cases, wisdom tooth removal may also help protect the results of previous orthodontic or restorative dental treatment.

The Wisdom Tooth Surgery Process

Wisdom tooth surgery is carefully planned based on the position of the teeth, the complexity of the extraction, and your comfort needs.

Examination And Treatment Planning

Before surgery, your dentist will perform a detailed examination using digital X-rays to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth, surrounding bone, and nearby nerves. This helps determine whether the teeth are fully erupted, partially impacted, or completely impacted beneath the gums. A personalized treatment plan will then be created based on your oral health and surgical needs.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery

During the procedure, the area is fully numbed using local anaesthetic to help ensure comfort. Depending on the complexity of the case, sedation options may also be discussed. If the wisdom tooth is impacted, a small opening may be made in the gum tissue to access the tooth safely. In some cases, the tooth may be divided into smaller sections to allow for gentler removal while protecting nearby structures. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is cleaned carefully to support proper healing. Sutures may be placed when needed.

Recovery And Aftercare

Healing after wisdom tooth surgery is an important part of the process. Mild swelling, tenderness, and jaw stiffness are common during the first few days and typically improve gradually. Patients are provided with detailed aftercare instructions to help support healing and reduce the risk of complications. This may include guidance on eating, cleaning the area, and managing swelling comfortably at home. Most patients recover well within a few days, although complete healing of the surgical area may take longer depending on the complexity of the extraction.

Cost Of Wisdom Tooth Removal Surgery In Oakville

The cost of wisdom tooth surgery can vary depending on the position of the teeth, the complexity of the extraction, and whether sedation is required. Every case is different, which is why a full examination is necessary before providing an accurate treatment estimate.

In many cases, the cost of a simple wisdom tooth extraction may range from approximately $200 to $600 per tooth. Surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth is generally more complex and may range from approximately $350 to $800 or more per tooth depending on the procedure.

Factors that may influence the overall cost include:

  • The number of wisdom teeth being removed.
  • Whether the teeth are impacted beneath the gums or bone.
  • The complexity of the surgical extraction.
  • The type of sedation or anaesthetic used.
  • The condition of the surrounding teeth and bone.

A consultation and digital X-rays are needed to evaluate your specific situation and determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

The procedure itself is performed using local anaesthetic to help keep the area numb and comfortable. Mild soreness and swelling afterward are normal and usually improve over the following days.

Treatment time depends on the number of teeth being removed and the complexity of the extraction. Many procedures can be completed within one appointment.

Soft foods such as yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and eggs are commonly recommended during the first few days of recovery.

Most patients begin feeling better within a few days, although full healing of the gums and bone may take several weeks.

Not always. Wisdom teeth that are healthy, fully erupted, and easy to clean may not require removal. However, impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are often recommended for extraction.

Many patients return to normal activities within a few days, depending on the complexity of the surgery and how they feel during recovery.

Impacted wisdom teeth may increase the risk of infection, tooth decay, gum disease, jaw discomfort, and damage to neighbouring teeth over time.
