A lifetime of smiles starts with a good foundation

Give your kids a great start building good oral hygiene habits and monitor their progress as they grow into their beautiful smiles. We understand how challenging and rewarding family care can be and kids need extra special consideration. Having a healthy smile is such an important part of childhood, let’s get them started on the right path with guidance that’s personalized for their needs.

A Lifetime of Healthy Smiles Begins with the Right Start

Set your child on the path to excellent oral health by instilling good dental habits early and monitoring their progress as they grow. We understand the joys and challenges of family care, along with the special attention children need. A bright, healthy smile is essential for their development—let’s support them with personalized guidance tailored to their unique needs.

Preparing for Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Encourage your child to talk about their upcoming dental appointment. The primary goal of this first visit is to create a comfortable and enjoyable experience, fostering a positive relationship with their dentist. New experiences can sometimes cause apprehension, but knowing what to expect can ease any worries. Here’s what your child can look forward to during their first dental appointment:

Comfortable Conversations

We take the time to engage with both you and your child, explaining each step of the visit and introducing them to the tools we use in a fun and approachable way. Our team uses child-friendly language to remove any uncertainty, ensuring your little one feels at ease. Rest assured—there’s nothing to fear!

Gentle Examination

We’ll carefully assess your child’s teeth, gums, tongue, and overall oral health. This check-up helps us identify any areas that may need extra attention at home. We’ll provide personalized recommendations and make note of any focus areas for future visits.

Hands-On Learning

We may ask your child to demonstrate their brushing technique so we can offer gentle guidance on improving their routine. Our team is always happy to answer any questions you or your child may have, ensuring they develop strong dental habits from the start.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your child’s first teeth typically emerge around six months of age. It’s recommended that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. If you notice any signs of discomfort or suspect an issue, don’t wait—schedule an appointment as soon as possible. It’s never too late to begin professional dental care.

Baby teeth play a crucial role beyond simply holding space for permanent teeth. They influence facial development, speech, chewing habits, and overall confidence. Early dental pain—even mild discomfort—can affect a child’s ability to chew properly, their food preferences, and their overall nutrition. Establishing good oral health from an early age helps ensure a lifetime of healthy smiles.

The duration of the appointment depends on your child’s needs and comfort level. On average, a first visit lasts about one hour.

After their first appointment, children should see the dentist as regularly as adults—typically every six months for a checkup and cleaning, unless advised otherwise. If your child experiences a toothache, jaw discomfort, excessive rubbing of their jaw, or avoids certain foods due to sensitivity, schedule an appointment right away.

Oral health extends beyond just teeth—it includes gums, tongue, cheeks, jaw joints, and supporting structures. When one part of the system is affected, it can impact overall health. Swollen, sore, or bleeding gums can be early warning signs of more serious dental concerns. Keeping gums healthy is essential for maintaining a strong foundation for lifelong oral wellness.

I’ve been coming to this Dental Office for many years and everyone is very friendly and good at what they do. Dental hygienist Pena is the best hygienist I have ever had, by far. Very good at cleaning my teeth but never at all painful as with every other hygienist I have ever used.

I always have a positive experience here! The receptionists are always incredibly sweet and helpful. As a student I was confused on how my school insurance worked but they gladly took the time and explained it thoroughly to me. Dr. Pina did my general cleaning and was very friendly (we even chatted during it!) and another Dr. did my fillings (I forgot her name unfortunately, I believe it started with a B) and she made it a very very comfortable process for me and is very knowledgeable about her practice. I was curious about some general questions about teeth/cavities and she explained it in an easy-to-understand way! I totally recommend going to this Oakville Smiles :)

A positive A+ experience with checkup by a professional, knowledgeable dentist, who put our interest first. The dental hygienist worked tirelessly to clean the 5 years of accumulated plaque, without causing any pain or discomfort. The staff is efficient and friendly. Oakville Smiles put a smile on both my husband and I, on our first visit there. Top notch service, highly recommend this dentist.
