What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a process that applies composite resin, the same material used in composite fillings, to enhance or repair teeth. This technique, referred to as Bonded Restoration, is ideal for rebuilding teeth that are chipped, cracked, or broken, restoring them to their natural state. With proper care, the results are durable and long-lasting. Dental bonding can also be used for cosmetic purposes, such as reshaping teeth, correcting discolouration, or closing small gaps, offering an alternative to orthodontics or veneers.

I recently had a very pleasant experience at Oakville Smiles Dentistry. My son needed a tooth extraction due to an infection, and the procedure went very smoothly, thanks to the Dr. Rupa Bhatt who handled it with utmost care. Additionally, I have been visiting the clinic for regular check-up and cleaning, and had a very friendly experience with the entire staff. Hajira, the coordinator, was amazing in managing the timings, making the entire process convenient and stress-free. I highly recommend Oakville Smiles Dentistry for both routine and urgent dental needs. This has to be the nicest team of professionals working as an excellent team.

I had my first visit today, and it was exceptional right from the start. I was immediately greeted by the staff, was such a warm and welcoming first impression. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been to the dentist, and it is one of my least favourite experiences. Dr. Rupa Bhatt and her team made every part of the experience very comfortable. They explained each step, was very knowledgeable and eased my anxieties throughout the appointment. My teeth feel better than ever after my check up and cleaning. I already have my next appointment booked. Highly recommended Dental practice!

How Does Dental Bonding Compare to Other Options?

When it comes to restoring teeth or improving your smile, there are several treatment options to consider. The best choice depends on your individual needs and goals. During your consultation, we will gladly review all available options, outlining their benefits and drawbacks, so you can make an informed decision. Here’s why dental bonding might be a suitable choice for you:

Fast and Comfortable

Unlike fillings or veneers, dental bonding usually doesn’t require extensive drilling to prepare the tooth. In most cases, little to no natural tooth structure needs to be removed, making the procedure minimally invasive and virtually painless.

Affordable

Treatments like dental veneers or orthodontics often involve a higher upfront cost, reflecting their complexity and ability to deliver dramatic transformations. For smaller adjustments, however, dental bonding offers a cost-effective solution without the need for a complex treatment plan.

Ideal for Minor Corrections

If your goal is to make significant changes to your smile, more comprehensive treatments like veneers, crowns, or orthodontics may be better suited to your needs. For small fixes, such as repairing chips, cracks, or gaps, dental bonding provides a simple and effective option.

The Dental Bonding Process

No matter if dental bonding is being done to fix a damaged tooth or to improve its appearance, the procedure follows the same steps. Here’s what will happen during your appointment:

Preparing the Tooth

To protect the surrounding teeth, a thin plastic strip known as a dental matrix is placed between the teeth. This ensures the adjacent tooth is shielded from the preparation gel or composite resin. The dentist will then clean and dry the tooth before applying a gentle acidic gel. This gel slightly roughens the tooth’s surface, allowing the bonding material to adhere more effectively.

Applying the Composite Resin

Once the gel is removed and the tooth is dried again, the composite resin is applied. The dentist will choose a resin that matches your natural tooth colour for a seamless appearance. The material is applied in thin layers, with each layer hardened using a special curing light to enhance strength and durability.

Final Touches

After ensuring your bite is properly aligned, the bonding process is complete. As a finishing step, the dentist will polish the bonded tooth to ensure a smooth and natural look. The result will blend beautifully with your other teeth—so much so that you might forget which tooth was treated. At future check-ups, the dentist will examine the bonded tooth for any signs of wear or damage to keep it in excellent condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lifespan of dental bonding on front teeth depends on factors such as its location, your dietary habits, and how well you maintain your oral hygiene. Typically, it can last anywhere from 4 to 10 years or longer. During regular dental check-ups, your dentist can monitor the bonding and apply more composite resin if necessary to keep it durable.

While dental bonding is not permanent, it is a highly durable solution. With good oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, and regular dental visits, it can last over a decade. If wear and tear occur, your dentist can reinforce the bonding by adding more composite resin.

These two treatments serve different purposes. Veneers are often the preferred choice for patients seeking longer-lasting results or more significant changes to their smile. Bonding, on the other hand, is less expensive, ideal for minor adjustments, and requires minimal alteration of the natural tooth. However, veneers generally have a longer lifespan and deliver more dramatic results.

Bonding does not harm your natural teeth in any significant way. The structure of your tooth is preserved under the bonded resin, remaining mostly unaffected. While the composite material might wear or chip over time, repairs are simple and straightforward. It’s worth noting that bonding doesn’t lighten with teeth whitening treatments, so whitening your teeth beforehand or replacing the bonding to match your desired shade afterward may be necessary. For a more durable and longer-lasting solution, veneers or crowns could be a better option.
